Kentucky basketball is preparing for one final preseason challenge as Mark Pope and the Wildcats welcome UCF to Rupp Arena on Wednesday night. With the 2026-27 regular season just around the corner, the exhibition matchup offers Kentucky one last opportunity to fine-tune its performance before the games begin to count.
The No. 23 Wildcats have made a promising start to their preseason schedule, recording victories over Little Rock and No. 19 Texas Tech. Kentucky opened with a convincing 69-49 win over Little Rock before delivering an encouraging 76-65 victory against Texas Tech last Friday.
The win over the Red Raiders was particularly important for a team still working to establish its identity. After a slow start, Kentucky settled into the game and found its rhythm offensively, demonstrating the depth and scoring balance Mark Pope hopes to see throughout the season.
Milan Momcilovic and Malachi Moreno led the way against Texas Tech, scoring 15 points apiece. Three additional Wildcats also reached double figures, highlighting the variety of scoring options available to Pope as he continues to shape his rotation.
However, despite the encouraging results, Kentucky still has areas to address before opening the regular season. Improving rebounding, building stronger chemistry, and becoming more consistent from the opening tip remain important priorities.
UCF presents the Wildcats with their final opportunity to work through those concerns in a competitive setting. The Knights have split their first two exhibition games, losing to LSU before bouncing back with a victory over Rollins College.
Although Wednesday’s contest is technically an exhibition, it provides valuable preparation for both teams as they approach the start of the regular season. For Kentucky, the emphasis will be on maintaining its recent momentum while avoiding the mistakes that could become costly against tougher opponents.
Pope will also want to see his players continue developing their roles within the offense. With several contributors capable of scoring in double figures, Kentucky has the potential to create matchup problems, provided the team can execute consistently and take better care of the basketball.
The Wildcats’ regular season begins November 3 against Manhattan, leaving little time for additional adjustments once the UCF game concludes. A strong performance Wednesday would give Kentucky another confidence boost heading into its season opener.
