The Kentucky Wildcats are making important moves behind the scenes, and Mark Pope has added two experienced basketball minds to his coaching staff ahead of the 2026-27 season. With one hire bringing a strong connection to Kentucky’s basketball tradition and the other offering valuable international experience, the Wildcats are strengthening their foundation for the challenges ahead.
Kentucky has officially hired Alfred Aboya as an assistant coach and former Wildcats standout John Pelphrey as the program’s Director of Player Development. Both appointments bring different strengths that could prove valuable as Pope continues building his program in Lexington.
Alfred Aboya Could Open New Doors for Kentucky
Aboya’s arrival gives Kentucky a coach with extensive international basketball experience and connections to emerging talent across Africa.
Before joining the Wildcats, he served as head coach of NBA Academy Africa and the Cameroon National Men’s Basketball Team. His work with young players across the continent could become an important asset as Kentucky looks to identify promising international prospects.
Aboya has coached Cameroon in FIBA competitions since becoming the national team’s head coach in 2022. One of his notable achievements came during the 2024 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, where Cameroon advanced to the semifinals.
His coaching journey also includes time with the Iowa Wolves in the NBA G League, where he worked as player development director, and an earlier graduate assistant position at Mississippi State.
Aboya understands the college game from his playing days, too. He played at UCLA from 2006 to 2009, appearing in 142 games and helping the Bruins reach three consecutive Final Fours. He also earned a place on the Pac-10 All-Defensive Team during his final season.
His combination of coaching experience, international relationships, and player development knowledge could give Kentucky another valuable recruiting resource.
John Pelphrey Brings Kentucky History Back Home
While Aboya offers global connections, Pelphrey brings something deeply familiar to Wildcats fans: a connection to one of the most memorable periods in Kentucky basketball history.
Pelphrey was a member of the Unforgettables, the beloved Kentucky team remembered for its determination during the early 1990s. He finished his college career with 1,257 points, ranking 32nd on the program’s all-time scoring list.
He also recorded 173 steals and 327 assists, ranking seventh and 13th, respectively, in those categories in Kentucky history.
Pelphrey’s coaching résumé includes stops at Oklahoma State, Marshall, Florida, South Alabama, Arkansas, Alabama, and Tennessee Tech.
At South Alabama, he won the Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship in 2006 and the regular-season title in 2007. He later led Arkansas to 23 victories during his first season in 2008.
Most recently, Pelphrey spent seven seasons as Tennessee Tech’s head coach.
What These Hires Mean for Kentucky
These appointments give Pope additional experience in recruiting, coaching, and player development.
Aboya could help expand Kentucky’s international recruiting connections, while Pelphrey brings institutional familiarity and years of coaching experience.
Whether these additions translate into more wins remains to be seen, but Kentucky has strengthened its staff in two distinct areas.
With the 2026-27 season approaching, Wildcats fans will be watching to see how these hires contribute to Pope’s vision for the program.
