Franck Kepnang is bringing more than size, defense and physicality to Kentucky’s frontcourt this season.
The Washington transfer recently opened up about the motivation behind his basketball journey and the personal reason that continues to push him every time he steps onto the court.
Kepnang, who is entering his first season with the Wildcats, spoke during Kentucky’s Media Day about how his love for basketball developed and why he embraces the daily grind that comes with competing at a high level.
“I really started playing when I was 14. From there on, I started loving the game…I love the grind,” Kepnang said.
For Kepnang, basketball is about much more than statistics, awards or recognition. He said he enjoys spending countless hours in the gym, improving his game and competing with the goal of winning.
“I’m a competitor,” Kepnang said. “You start to become addicted to winning. I want to do everything I possibly can to always be on that winning side.”
That competitive mindset could become an important part of Kentucky’s new-look roster.
The Wildcats have placed an increased emphasis on defense and physicality this offseason, adding size to the frontcourt with Kepnang and Ousmane N’Diaye. Mark Pope has repeatedly discussed the impact of the team’s length and the progress Kentucky has made defensively.
But behind Kepnang’s relentless approach is a much more personal motivation.
When asked about his “why,” the Kentucky big man immediately pointed to his mother.
“My why is my mother,” Kepnang said. “Seeing everything she’s been through, and I’m seeing that she’s the hardest worker out of anybody else I know.”
Kepnang explained that everything he does on the basketball court is connected to his desire to create a better future for himself and his family.
“Seeing what she has done for me to be able to create a future for us both…that’s better than what she has experienced or what was even in the book for me is my why.”
That motivation gives his Kentucky journey an even deeper meaning.
Kepnang understands that basketball provides him with an opportunity to change the trajectory of his life while creating something meaningful for his family.
“It’s not only because I love the game, but also because I know there’s just so much opportunity,” he said. “I have really a chance to create that life-changing trajectory for my family and my legacy.”
Now, that journey continues in Lexington.
With Kentucky looking to become a more connected and physical team under Mark Pope, Kepnang will have an opportunity to establish himself as an important piece of the Wildcats’ frontcourt.
His size and defensive presence can give Kentucky another option around the basket, but his mentality may be just as important.
For Kepnang, every workout, practice and game represents another chance to honor the work his mother has put in and move his family toward the future he envisions.
And with the 2026-27 season approaching, Big Blue Nation is about to see what that motivation looks like on the court.
