Kentucky head coach Mark Pope appears increasingly comfortable with the roster and coaching staff he has assembled as the Wildcats prepare for the 2026-27 season.
After months of discussion surrounding Kentucky’s open 15th roster spot and the possibility of adding another assistant coach, Pope indicated at UK Media Day that there are no immediate plans to make either move.
When asked about the roster, Pope made it clear that the current group is what Kentucky expects to take into the season.
“Our roster right now is what we’re expecting to go to battle with,” Pope said.
That does not mean the Wildcats have completely closed the door on future additions. Pope emphasized that college basketball can change quickly and that Kentucky will remain open to opportunities if the right situation becomes available.
For now, however, the focus is on developing the players already in Lexington and building chemistry within the group.
“I like our group, and right now, everything we’re doing right now is focused on growing this group together the way we have it, and trying to build the best we can,” Pope said.
The situation surrounding the 15th roster spot has been a major offseason storyline. Kentucky briefly appeared to fill the opening when former Missouri standout Mark Mitchell committed to the Wildcats in August. Mitchell later returned to Missouri, leaving Kentucky with 14 players on the roster.
Rather than immediately searching for another replacement, Pope appears prepared to enter the season with the current roster.
The coaching staff is also taking shape without an immediate addition. Alvin Brooks III and Jason Hart are no longer with the program, while former NBA player Mo Williams has joined Pope’s staff. Kentucky also brought in Keegan Brown as director of roster management, while Stephanie Campbell has become another important addition to the basketball operations group.
Pope acknowledged that the staff could still evolve, but he expressed strong satisfaction with how the current group is working together.
“There’s a real synergy with what we’re doing,” Pope said. “I like our staff so much right now.”
Pope also highlighted the contributions of Williams, Brown and Campbell, saying the current structure is functioning at a level he has not experienced previously during his time at Kentucky.
The Wildcats also have additional personnel who can contribute on the court under NCAA rules, including director of basketball operations Nick Robinson, video coordinator Matt Santoro and assistant video coordinator Will Corbin.
With Big Blue Madness approaching and the regular season just over a month away, Kentucky’s attention is now shifting toward preparation rather than adding pieces.
Pope has left the door open for changes if the right opportunity presents itself, but his latest comments suggest that the Wildcats are currently comfortable moving forward with a 14-player roster and their existing coaching structure.
For Kentucky, the priority now is simple: build the chemistry, development and identity of the group already in place before the 2026-27 season officially begins.
