Kentucky basketball is back on the practice floor, and Mark Pope is already getting a closer look at what his 2026–27 roster can become.
With so much talent on the roster, much of the early attention has understandably centered on players like Milan Momcilovic, Malachi Moreno and Zoom Diallo. However, the opening practices have also revealed another name that could become increasingly important for the Wildcats.
That player is Mason Williams.
The young guard has continued to attract attention with his basketball IQ, work ethic and ability to handle point guard responsibilities. Those qualities could give him an opportunity to carve out a bigger role as Kentucky’s season approaches.
Williams’ development as a shooter is another reason to keep an eye on him.
He’s reportedly been putting in significant time in the gym, working to expand his game and become a more reliable offensive option. For a Kentucky team with several players capable of creating their own shots, having a guard who can make smart decisions, move the ball and knock down open opportunities could be extremely valuable.
Williams doesn’t have to become one of Kentucky’s top scorers to make an impact.
His ability to control the offense, protect the basketball, defend his position and consistently make the right reads could be enough to earn meaningful minutes. Those are the types of details that often determine which players separate themselves during preseason competition.
And that’s exactly why these early practices matter.
Pope isn’t simply looking at which players have the most individual talent. He’s also evaluating who can execute the team’s system, compete consistently and make the pieces around them better.
Williams has an opportunity to prove he can do those things.
It’s still far too early to predict exactly what his role will look like once Kentucky begins playing games. There is plenty of time for the roster hierarchy to change as practices continue and the Wildcats get closer to the regular season.
But the early signs make Williams an intriguing player to monitor.
Kentucky already has plenty of established names expected to attract attention this season. If Williams continues to develop and impress during practice, however, BBN could soon have another player to add to that list.
For now, Mason Williams may be one of the more interesting potential breakout candidates hiding in plain sight on Kentucky’s roster.
