Tyran Stokes chose Kansas over Kentucky after a long recruitment battle, but now he’ll have an opportunity to face the Wildcats when the Jayhawks meet Mark Pope’s team in November.
The recruitment of Stokes became one of the biggest storylines of the 2026 recruiting cycle. For months, Kentucky and Kansas remained heavily involved in the race for the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect before Stokes finally announced his decision on April 28.
He chose Bill Self and Kansas, ending Kentucky’s hopes of adding the highly regarded prospect to its roster.
Both programs had built talented rosters around the possibility of landing Stokes, but Kansas ultimately won the battle. Kentucky then turned its attention toward reshaping its roster and eventually landed Milan Momcilovic, one of the biggest names available in the transfer portal.
Now, months after choosing Kansas, Stokes is set to face the program he turned down.
Kentucky and Kansas will meet in the annual State Farm Champions Classic on Tuesday, November 10, in Chicago. The game is scheduled to tip off at 9:30 p.m. ET, following Michigan State vs. Duke.
The matchup already carries plenty of history, but Stokes adds another intriguing storyline.
Following the announcement of the game’s tipoff time, Stokes took to Instagram and left a simple message:
“Right around the corner.”
That brief comment immediately adds another layer of anticipation to what should already be one of Kentucky’s biggest games of the early season.
For Mark Pope and the Wildcats, the 2026-27 schedule is loaded with major challenges. Kentucky will face Louisville, North Carolina, Indiana and Kansas, among other notable opponents.
But the Kansas game stands out because of the history between the two programs and the recent recruiting battle involving Stokes.
Kentucky spent months pursuing the top-ranked prospect, only to watch him ultimately choose Kansas. Now, Stokes will have his first opportunity to face the Wildcats while wearing a Jayhawks uniform.
For Kentucky, the game will also provide an early test for Pope’s revamped roster under the national spotlight.
The Champions Classic has not always been kind to the Wildcats in recent years, although Kentucky did defeat Duke in the 2024 edition. This year’s matchup gives the Wildcats another chance to make an early statement against a major opponent.
And with Stokes already looking forward to the matchup, the anticipation is only going to grow.
November 10 is getting closer, and BBN now has another reason to circle the Kentucky-Kansas showdown.
