Kentucky basketball is officially back on the practice floor, and Mark Pope is getting his first real opportunity to see how his revamped roster comes together.
While much of the attention naturally surrounds the Wildcats’ biggest names, one player who could quietly become an important piece for Kentucky is Mason Williams.
The young guard has continued to turn heads with his approach to the game, particularly his basketball IQ, work ethic and ability to operate at the point guard position.
For a Kentucky team with plenty of new faces, having a guard who can make smart decisions with the ball could become extremely valuable.
Williams has reportedly been putting in significant work, spending extensive time in the gym and continuing to develop his game. His shooting ability has also been a major part of that development, giving him another way to contribute when he gets his opportunity.
What makes Williams particularly intriguing is that he doesn’t necessarily need to dominate the ball to make an impact.
His ability to read the floor, make the right pass and keep the offense moving could allow Kentucky’s other weapons to play more freely.
And Kentucky certainly has plenty of weapons.
Zoom Diallo gives Pope an experienced option in the backcourt, while Alex Wilkins brings scoring ability. On the wing, Milan Momcilovic provides elite shooting potential, while Malachi Moreno gives Kentucky a major interior presence.
That combination could create opportunities for Williams to carve out a role.
For Pope, these early practices are about figuring out which players can consistently execute when the intensity rises. Individual talent is important, but understanding how players fit together is just as critical.
Williams appears to have an opportunity to prove that he belongs in that conversation.
There is still a long way to go before Kentucky’s regular-season opener, and practice success doesn’t automatically translate into production once the games begin. But the early stages of practice can reveal which players are separating themselves from the pack.
If Williams continues to make an impression, Pope could have another intriguing option to work into the rotation.
And for a Kentucky roster filled with high-profile talent, sometimes the player who quietly earns the coaching staff’s trust can become one of the season’s biggest surprises.
