Kentucky basketball still does not have a jersey-patch sponsor, but J. Batt’s latest comments suggest the Wildcats are in no hurry to change that.
As Kentucky continues looking for ways to increase revenue and invest in its athletic department, the basketball jersey patch has become one of the latest opportunities on the table.
Kentucky football already has a partnership with UK Invests, which agreed to a one-year deal worth nearly $5 million for the football jersey patch. The basketball program, however, has yet to announce a sponsor.
So why is Kentucky taking its time?
Batt addressed the situation during Thursday’s Champions Blue Board of Governors meeting, revealing that the school has already received significant interest from potential basketball jersey partners.
“What I’d say is we’ve had a tremendous interest,” Batt told KSR. “Part of what we get to do, because we have so much momentum, is be a little bit choosy.”
That appears to be the biggest reason behind the delay.
Rather than quickly accepting an offer, Kentucky is taking the time to determine which company makes the most sense for the basketball program and its brand.
Batt emphasized just how important the decision is to the university, particularly because of what the Kentucky basketball jersey represents.
“So it’s so important to us that, particularly on that sacred piece of cloth, that we have the right partner,” Batt said.
Kentucky basketball’s national profile gives the school considerable leverage when negotiating a sponsorship. The Wildcats have a long history of success, including eight NCAA championships, while continuing to maintain a strong presence in the NBA.
With that brand value, Kentucky appears to believe it can be selective about who eventually appears on the team’s uniforms.
For Big Blue Nation, that means the absence of a jersey sponsor should not necessarily be viewed as a sign that the search has stalled. Batt’s comments indicate that there is substantial interest and that Kentucky is simply taking its time before making a decision.
The school has not announced a specific sponsor or timeline for a deal. For now, the focus remains on finding the right partnership for Kentucky basketball.
