Mark Pope and Kentucky may have taken another important step in their pursuit of one of the nation’s top prospects in the 2027 recruiting class.
The Wildcats recently welcomed five-star center Lewis Uvwo to Lexington for an official visit, and the timing couldn’t have been better for Kentucky. The visit gave Uvwo an opportunity to experience the program, the campus and the atmosphere surrounding Kentucky basketball firsthand.
According to recruiting reports, the weekend created positive momentum for the Wildcats.
That doesn’t mean Uvwo is ready to make a decision, but Kentucky appears to have strengthened its position in a recruitment involving one of the most coveted big men in the country.
Kentucky hosted a major 2027 prospect
Uvwo is listed at 6-foot-11 and 225 pounds and plays for Prolific Prep.
He is regarded as the No. 1 center in the 2027 class and a top-10 overall prospect, making him exactly the type of high-level recruit Pope wants to bring to Lexington.
Kentucky’s pursuit of Uvwo is also significant because Pope is attempting to build a recruiting pipeline that extends beyond the transfer portal.
The Wildcats have been aggressive in using transfers to construct their roster, but consistently landing elite high school prospects could give Kentucky another way to build for the future.
Uvwo could be an important piece of that plan.
The timing of the visit mattered
Kentucky’s football game against Alabama took place during Uvwo’s visit, giving the prospect a chance to see the energy surrounding the university during one of the biggest weekends on the campus calendar.
For a recruit, seeing the environment firsthand can provide a perspective that simply isn’t available through phone calls, rankings or social media.
Kentucky reportedly made a positive impression.
Still, there is plenty of work remaining. Uvwo’s recruitment is ongoing, and other major programs are expected to remain involved.
The Wildcats will need to continue building their relationship with the five-star center if they hope to turn this momentum into something more substantial.
Pope is also targeting other elite talent
Kentucky’s interest in Uvwo isn’t happening in isolation.
The Wildcats are also pursuing five-star forward Ryan Hampton in the 2027 class, giving Pope multiple opportunities to build a high-level recruiting foundation.
Landing either player would add another elite prospect to Kentucky’s future plans, while landing both would give the Wildcats an especially intriguing group of young talent.
The modern college basketball landscape requires coaches to balance high school recruiting, the transfer portal, NBA Draft decisions and roster management.
Pope is attempting to operate across all of those areas.
For now, there is no commitment from Uvwo, and Kentucky’s pursuit remains ongoing. But an official visit from a top-10 national prospect is an important development.
If Pope can turn the positive momentum from Uvwo’s Lexington visit into a commitment down the road, it could become a major recruiting moment for Kentucky’s 2027 class.
