Kentucky fans were understandably disappointed when Mark Mitchell decided to return to Missouri, but his departure does not necessarily mean the Wildcats’ season is headed in the wrong direction.
Mitchell would have been a major addition to Mark Pope’s roster. His experience, versatility and ability to contribute on both ends of the floor could have given Kentucky another proven piece. With that opportunity now gone, however, Pope has to turn his attention toward the players already wearing Kentucky blue.
And there may already be an answer on the roster.
The player who could become particularly important is Ousmane N’Diaye.
With Mitchell no longer available, Kentucky needs N’Diaye to make a significant impact in the frontcourt. His size and defensive potential give Pope an option that could help replace some of what the Wildcats expected Mitchell to provide.
N’Diaye does not have to become Mark Mitchell. That is not the point.
Instead, Kentucky needs him to embrace a larger role and become a consistent presence around the basket. If he can defend, rebound, finish around the rim and provide energy, the Wildcats could have enough frontcourt production to remain dangerous.
That becomes even more important alongside Milan Momcilovic and Malachi Moreno.
Momcilovic gives Kentucky a major shooting threat, while Moreno brings size and interior ability. If N’Diaye can take another step forward, Pope could have a frontcourt combination capable of giving opponents plenty of problems.
There are also other players who could help soften the impact of Mitchell’s departure.
Alex Wilkins is expected to play an important role on the perimeter, while players such as Kam Williams and Mason Williams could see increased opportunities depending on how the season develops. Kentucky has plenty of upside throughout the roster.
The biggest question is whether that upside turns into consistent production.
Mitchell’s departure certainly changes Kentucky’s outlook, but it does not eliminate the Wildcats’ potential. Pope still has a roster filled with players capable of taking on bigger responsibilities.
For N’Diaye in particular, this could be a defining opportunity.
Instead of Kentucky searching desperately for someone to replace Mitchell, the answer could come from within the roster. If N’Diaye delivers the type of season Pope needs from him, what initially looked like a devastating loss could become an opportunity for another Wildcat to emerge.
Kentucky fans may have every reason to be disappointed about Mitchell.
But they may not have to worry nearly as much as they initially thought.
