Mark Pope and Kentucky basketball may have another major recruiting opportunity developing, but there is already one detail surrounding five-star 2028 prospect DJ Okoth that has Kentucky fans asking questions.
Okoth is scheduled to make an unofficial visit to Lexington on Oct. 2, according to 247Sports’ Dushawn London. The timing is particularly intriguing because his visit will coincide with Big Blue Madness weekend, giving Kentucky a chance to showcase the program in front of one of the nation’s top young prospects.
The 6-foot-6, 180-pound small forward from Bartlett, Tennessee, has quickly emerged as one of the most highly regarded players in the 2028 recruiting class.
During his sophomore season, Okoth averaged 13.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per game while shooting 56% from the field. He also helped Bartlett win its first state championship since 2001 and earned TSSAA Class 4A Mr. Basketball honors.
The 247Sports Composite currently ranks Okoth No. 17 nationally, No. 5 among small forwards and No. 1 overall in Tennessee.
Kentucky was among the programs to move early in his recruitment, offering Okoth on July 21. The Wildcats are now one of nearly 20 programs that have extended an offer to the talented forward.
That is where the situation gets interesting.
Kentucky is not the only SEC program making a strong push. Okoth has also scheduled visits to Tennessee for Oct. 16 and Vanderbilt for Nov. 14. With several major programs involved, the Wildcats will have plenty of competition for his commitment.
Still, Pope has given Kentucky an early opportunity to make a lasting impression.
Hosting Okoth during Big Blue Madness could be especially valuable. The event allows Kentucky to give him a firsthand look at the atmosphere surrounding the program and show him what playing in front of Big Blue Nation could eventually feel like.
There is no indication that Okoth is close to making a decision, so Kentucky fans should not get ahead of themselves.
But the fact that one of the country’s top 2028 prospects is coming to Lexington this early in his recruitment is certainly something worth watching.
The question now is whether Pope can turn this visit into something much bigger.
For BBN, Oct. 2 could be the beginning of a recruitment that becomes very important in the years ahead.
