Kentucky fans are used to seeing Mark Pope on the basketball court, but on Saturday, the Wildcats head coach made sure his presence was felt somewhere completely different.
With Kentucky football beginning a new era under head coach Will Stein, Pope and the Kentucky men’s basketball team showed up in force at Kroger Field to support the program.
Pope had already brought his basketball team to the stadium earlier in the week for preseason conditioning, where Ousmane N’Diaye even got an opportunity to try his hand—or, more accurately, his foot—at kicking.
But Saturday was about supporting Stein and the football Wildcats.
Pope Joins J Batt at the Cat Walk
The day began with Pope joining new Kentucky athletic director and Champions Blue CEO J Batt at the Cat Walk.
The two were there to cheer on the football team as the players and staff made their way through the crowd and into Kroger Field for Kentucky’s season opener against Youngstown State.
Pope greeted the players and made sure to show his support before heading into the stadium.
He later took his golf cart around the tailgating areas, soaking in the atmosphere and interacting with Kentucky fans.
Pope even found time for an impromptu quarterback audition, tossing the football around with some kids in the parking lot and connecting with a receiver for a touchdown.
The Basketball Wildcats Showed Up
Pope wasn’t the only member of the basketball program supporting the football team.
The entire Kentucky men’s basketball roster turned out in impressive numbers, with players including Malachi Moreno, Milan Momcilovic, Zoom Diallo, Alex Wilkins, Kam Williams, Braydon Hawthorne and Justin McBride spotted at Kroger Field.
The players also had the chance to meet several former Kentucky football stars who were back in Lexington before the start of the NFL regular season.
Josh Hines-Allen, Wan’Dale Robinson and Chris Rodriguez Jr. were among the former Wildcats who crossed paths with the current basketball players.
It was another visible sign of the growing unity across Kentucky athletics.
Zoom Diallo Brings the Energy
Zoom Diallo also provided one of the most entertaining moments of the trip.
As the basketball team left Kroger Field, Diallo delivered the message that has become closely associated with Kentucky’s current mentality:
“Eat what you kill, shorty!”
The phrase perfectly fits the aggressive mindset Pope has been trying to build within his program.
Kentucky Men’s Basketball also released footage of Pope addressing his players during preseason workouts.
His message was short but direct:
“We’re on a mission.”
Those words could easily become the theme for Kentucky heading into the 2026-27 season.
Kentucky Football Delivers on Opening Day
The basketball team’s support came on a day when Kentucky football gave Big Blue Nation plenty to celebrate.
The Wildcats defeated Youngstown State 45-13 in the first game of the Will Stein era.
Quarterback Kenny Minchey delivered a spectacular performance, throwing for 300 yards and four touchdowns as Kentucky’s offense produced 500 total yards.
It was exactly the kind of opening performance that Kentucky fans wanted to see from the new coaching staff.
Now, attention will eventually turn toward Pope and his basketball team.
Big Blue Madness is scheduled for October 2, putting the start of Kentucky’s basketball season less than four weeks away.
For now, Pope and his players are enjoying the football team’s success while continuing to build the culture around their own program.
And if Pope’s message is any indication, Kentucky basketball isn’t simply preparing for another season.
The Wildcats believe they’re on a mission.
