Kentucky basketball is starting to generate serious momentum heading into the 2026-27 season.
The Wildcats received a major boost in the latest preseason rankings after former Missouri and Duke standout Mark Mitchell committed to Kentucky, giving Mark Pope another proven scorer and versatile piece for his roster.
The move has already caught the attention of national analysts, with Kentucky climbing significantly in multiple preseason rankings.
Kentucky Makes a Major Jump
CBS Sports has moved Kentucky up to No. 12 in its latest 2026-27 Top 25 and 1 preseason rankings.
That represents a four-spot jump from the Wildcats’ previous position at No. 16.
While CBS Sports still believes there is pressure on Pope entering his third season in Lexington, the outlet acknowledged the impressive job Kentucky has done rebuilding its roster.
Kentucky brought back freshman center Malachi Moreno after he withdrew from the 2026 NBA Draft, added elite shooter Milan Momcilovic from Iowa State and then landed Mitchell.
That combination has significantly raised the ceiling of the Wildcats.
Mitchell Brings Another Level of Production
Mitchell could be the addition that changes everything.
The former Missouri standout averaged 18.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 33.8 minutes per game last season.
His ability to score, create opportunities for teammates and contribute defensively gives Kentucky another experienced player who can make an impact in multiple areas.
More importantly, Mitchell gives Pope another option when the Wildcats need someone capable of creating offense late in games.
Kentucky Also Climbs in Rothstein’s Rankings
CBS Sports isn’t the only national outlet becoming more optimistic about Kentucky.
Jon Rothstein has the Wildcats ranked No. 15, moving them up two spots from No. 17.
His projected starting lineup includes:
Zoom Diallo
Alex Wilkins
Mark Mitchell
Milan Momcilovic
Malachi Moreno
That group could give Kentucky an intriguing mix of size, shooting, playmaking and scoring.
The Wildcats also have considerable depth behind the projected starters, including Mason Williams, Ousmane N’Diaye, Trent Noah, Brayden Hawthorne, Justin McBride, Jerone Morton, Franck Kepnang and Kam Williams.
The Biggest Question Is Still Mitchell’s Eligibility
Despite the excitement surrounding the commitment, there is still an important issue hanging over the situation.
Mitchell recently received a favorable ruling from a Jefferson Circuit Court judge allowing him to pursue another season of college basketball, paving the way for his commitment to Kentucky.
However, the NCAA eligibility dispute remains an important part of the story.
If Mitchell is ultimately permitted to play the entire season, his presence could dramatically alter Kentucky’s expectations.
The Wildcats already had plenty of talent, but adding a player coming off an 18.3-point-per-game season gives Pope another experienced offensive weapon.
For a Kentucky team looking to bounce back and make a deeper postseason run, that could be enormous.
And now, with Kentucky sitting inside the top 15 in multiple preseason projections, the national perception surrounding Pope’s team is changing quickly.
BBN was waiting for a reason to believe.
The Mark Mitchell commitment may have just given them one.
