The wait is finally over for Jaxon Kohler, with the Michigan State transfer reportedly reaching the point where his decision on his next college destination is imminent.
Kentucky Basketball has remained firmly in the race, but the Wildcats are facing a major challenge from BYU as Kohler prepares to make his choice.
According to KSR’s Jack Pilgrim, Kohler narrowed his list to Kentucky and BYU, eliminating Kansas and Louisville from consideration. Both remaining programs had Zoom meetings with Kohler on Wednesday, with Kentucky’s meeting lasting roughly 2.5 hours.
That lengthy conversation gave Mark Pope and his staff an important opportunity to make their final pitch.
For Kentucky, this recruitment carries even more significance because the Wildcats have one scholarship spot remaining for the 2026-27 season.
Kohler has emerged as one of the players Kentucky could add to complete its roster. The Wildcats have apparently shown enough interest to remain in contention despite BYU being viewed as the favorite for much of the recruitment.
BYU has an obvious advantage.
Kohler is a Utah native and grew up only about 15 minutes from the Cougars’ campus. That familiarity and proximity could make BYU a difficult team for Kentucky to beat at the finish line.
Still, Kentucky has given itself a legitimate opportunity.
The Wildcats also have to consider the situation surrounding Missouri transfer Mark Mitchell. Mitchell could arguably be the more talented option, but his potential availability comes with questions surrounding SEC transfer rules.
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey has maintained that conference transfer restrictions remain in place for players who did not enter the transfer portal during the spring window. Recent legal developments have complicated the situation, while Tennessee’s decision to take former Vanderbilt center Jalen Washington has added another wrinkle.
That uncertainty could make Kohler an attractive and more straightforward option for Kentucky.
The former Michigan State big man would bring valuable experience and provide another proven frontcourt presence to Mark Pope’s roster. His ability to contribute immediately could make him an important addition if Kentucky lands him.
Now, however, there is little left to do except wait for the final announcement.
Kentucky has made its pitch. BYU has made its pitch. Kohler has heard from both programs and now has a decision to make.
For Big Blue Nation, the question is no longer who is still recruiting Jaxon Kohler. It is whether Kentucky did enough to convince him to finish the journey in Lexington.
The answer could determine the final piece of Mark Pope’s 2026-27 roster.
