The Kentucky Wildcats may still have one scholarship available for the 2026-27 season, but head coach Mark Pope isn’t feeling any pressure to use it.
Speaking with KSR before the team departed for Las Vegas, Pope explained that Kentucky remains active in evaluating potential additions. However, he emphasized that any new player would have to be the perfect fit rather than simply filling the final roster spot.
“We’re still active,” Pope said. “I love our roster right now, but if we find the right piece at the right time, it could look different. It could be a developmental piece or it could be a depth piece.”
For now, Pope is pleased with the 14-man group already on campus. After an aggressive offseason focused on building a balanced roster, he believes the Wildcats have assembled the type of team he envisioned.
“I like our gym. Our gym feels good,” Pope added. “We had very clear intentions when we worked through the transfer portal to build this team, and I like where we are. We have a lot of creators, and we’re already seeing that on the practice floor.”
One of Kentucky’s biggest offseason priorities was improving its backcourt with bigger, more dynamic playmakers who can create offense while complementing the team’s perimeter shooters. Pope believes that combination will give the Wildcats greater versatility than in recent seasons.
The Wildcats are now heading to Las Vegas, where they’ll continue building chemistry as a team while taking in NBA Summer League action. Although the coaching staff will continue monitoring recruiting opportunities, Pope made it clear he has confidence in the current roster and isn’t willing to make a move unless it truly strengthens the team.
For now, Kentucky’s final scholarship remains available—but only the right player will earn it.
