Former Kentucky guard Collin Chandler is addressing the speculation surrounding his departure from Lexington after comments from a recent BYU podcast interview sparked widespread discussion among Big Blue Nation.
A short clip circulating on social media led some fans to believe Chandler was criticizing Kentucky when he spoke about wanting to be part of “a program that cares about their athletics.” Without the full context, many interpreted the remarks as a shot at the Wildcats.
Chandler quickly responded, explaining that his comments were actually about his original recruitment to BYU during his high school years, not his experience at Kentucky or his decision to transfer this offseason.
The complete interview tells a different story.
According to Chandler, he deliberately avoided discussing a transfer while Kentucky’s season was still in progress. He felt he owed that respect to head coach Mark Pope, his teammates, and the entire Kentucky program for the opportunity they had given him.
Only after the season ended did Chandler and his wife, Hannah, begin seriously considering their future. The couple spent time praying, speaking with family, and evaluating what would be best before deciding that returning to their home state of Utah and joining BYU was the right choice.
Chandler also addressed criticism directed toward his wife. Some fans had suggested Hannah influenced the transfer decision, but Chandler made it clear the choice was made together and was based on what they believed was best for their family—not because of outside pressure.
Despite transferring, Chandler spoke respectfully about his time at Kentucky and expressed appreciation for the relationships he built within the program.
While his college career will now continue at BYU, Chandler’s explanation has provided important context, showing that his departure was a personal and family-centered decision rather than a reflection of dissatisfaction with Kentucky or Mark Pope’s program.
