Kentucky’s summer practices are already creating plenty of excitement, but one player has emerged as an unexpected standout.
Justin McBride, the veteran transfer who previously played at Oklahoma State, Nevada, and James Madison, has been one of the biggest surprises since arriving in Lexington. Thanks to an impressive offseason transformation, McBride has quickly caught the attention of head coach Mark Pope and the Wildcats’ coaching staff.
Now listed at 6-foot-8 and 250 pounds, McBride has reportedly lost 10 to 12 pounds of body fat since the end of last season. The improved conditioning has made him quicker, more mobile, and far more effective during Kentucky’s early summer workouts than many expected.
During a recent “Mark Pope vs. the Shot Clock” segment on the UK Sports Network, Pope made a comparison that immediately grabbed the attention of Kentucky fans.
“Julius Randle vibes, seriously,” Pope said.
It’s a statement that carries weight considering Randle’s legendary season at Kentucky before becoming an NBA All-Star. Pope wasn’t suggesting McBride is the next Julius Randle in terms of overall talent, but he does see similarities in their style of play.
Like Randle, McBride uses his strength and physicality to overpower defenders, create space around the basket, and battle on the glass. He also brings an added dimension with his outside shooting, connecting on 40% of his three-point attempts last season, making him a dangerous catch-and-shoot option.
That blend of toughness and perimeter shooting could provide exactly what Kentucky has been looking for. The Wildcats have needed more physicality in recent seasons, and McBride appears ready to help fill that role.
While it’s still early in the summer, the buzz surrounding McBride continues to grow. If he keeps progressing at this pace, Kentucky may have landed one of the most underrated transfers in college basketball—and the “Julius Randle vibes” might be more than just an offseason headline.
