When Malachi Moreno announced he was withdrawing from the 2026 NBA Draft and returning to Kentucky, Big Blue Nation celebrated immediately. But now, the Wildcats big man has revealed the surprising story behind that life-changing decision—and it’s one fans can’t stop talking about.
Most players make career-defining decisions in a quiet room, surrounded by family, agents, and coaches. Moreno’s experience was anything but ordinary.
During a recent appearance on BBN Tonight with Maggie Davis, Moreno shared that he was attending an Inter Miami CF match in Miami, watching soccer legend Lionel Messi in action, when he made the call that would shape Kentucky’s upcoming season.
The atmosphere inside the stadium was electric, making communication nearly impossible. Yet Moreno knew exactly what he wanted to say.
“It was a little hard to FaceTime just because it was so loud,” Moreno explained. “So all I did was call him, and I had my phone in one hand and I was plugging my ear with the other so I could hear him.”
On the other end of the line was Kentucky head coach Mark Pope, anxiously waiting to hear Moreno’s final decision.
“I told him, ‘I’m coming back, and I’m ready to work,'” Moreno said.
Pope’s response was immediate.
“He was super excited. He was like, ‘I’m ready to work too, and we’re going to be dangerous.'”
That simple conversation instantly gave Kentucky a major boost heading into the 2026-27 season.
But the memorable moments didn’t stop there.
Moreno revealed that shortly after making his decision official, a Kentucky fan somehow found him in the crowd at the Miami match.
“Once I made it official, it was love like that,” Moreno said. “I was at an Inter Miami soccer game watching Lionel Messi, and a Kentucky fan literally came from the stands and found me. I was like, ‘What are you doing in Miami?'”
For Moreno, it was another reminder of how passionate and widespread Kentucky’s fan base truly is.
“That just shows the Big Blue runs deep. We’re everywhere.”
The decision to return wasn’t made lightly. Moreno explained that feedback from NBA teams consistently pointed to the same conclusion: another season in college could significantly improve his long-term professional future.
Scouts emphasized the massive leap many players make between their freshman and sophomore seasons. Moreno believes that extra year can help him become a more complete player while expanding his offensive versatility and leadership abilities.
“Now I’ve got to be a big, loud sophomore,” Moreno said.
That mindset is already influencing his approach heading into summer workouts.
Moreno also expressed confidence in the roster Mark Pope has assembled. With returning talent, key additions, and strong team chemistry already developing, he believes Kentucky has all the ingredients needed to compete at the highest level.
According to Moreno, the Wildcats possess a rare combination of size, versatility, toughness, and playmaking ability.
“We’ve got positional size everywhere, guys who can do the dirty work, guys who can create for others,” he said. “That’s when you really thrive.”
Family also played a major role in helping Moreno reach his decision. He credited his older brother Michael for encouraging him to focus on happiness, growth, and enjoying the college experience rather than rushing to the next level.
In the end, that advice helped solidify what Moreno already felt in his heart.
“When I told him I was coming back, I said this is the happiest decision I’m ever going to make.”
Now, with the NBA Draft process behind him and another year in Lexington ahead, Moreno is focused on becoming a leader, improving his game, and helping Kentucky chase championship aspirations.
And after hearing the untold story behind his return, Big Blue Nation has even more reason to be excited about what’s coming next.
