Kentucky looked like it was finally putting the finishing touches on a huge offseason after Malachi Moreno officially returned to Lexington. But even with most of Mark Pope’s roster plans falling into place, one major storyline is still hanging over the Wildcats — the pursuit of Iowa State star Milan Momcilovic.
With Kentucky missing out on elite prospect Tyran Stokes, the Wildcats still have room — and significant NIL resources — available for another major addition on the wing. That’s why the focus has quickly shifted toward Momcilovic, one of the best shooters in college basketball.
The timing, however, has become extremely important.
Momcilovic is expected to make his NBA Draft decision soon, and Kentucky has been viewed as one of the strongest contenders if he decides to return to college. But according to Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68, another powerhouse program is beginning to make a serious move: Arizona.
The report suggests Arizona could become heavily involved if current star Koa Peat leaves, opening the door for the Wildcats from Tucson to aggressively target Momcilovic. That development could suddenly create a major recruiting battle at the worst possible time for Kentucky.
Goodman also mentioned that Momcilovic could command an NIL package worth as much as $7 million from a program determined to land him. While the specific school behind that rumored number wasn’t identified, it shows just how massive this recruitment has become.
For Kentucky, the pressure is obvious.
Mark Pope has made it clear he wants elite shooting and scoring added to the roster, and Momcilovic fits that need perfectly. After Kentucky struggled offensively at times last season, especially from the perimeter, adding a player who shot nearly 48% from three-point range on high volume would completely change the ceiling of the team.
The fit feels almost too perfect to ignore.
Momcilovic’s ability to stretch the floor, create matchup problems, and instantly elevate Kentucky’s offense makes him one of the most valuable remaining players available. That’s why many around the program believe Kentucky may have no choice but to go all-in financially if they want to secure the commitment.
And now, with Arizona reportedly entering the race, waiting around may no longer be an option.
Even though Momcilovic has reportedly said his decision won’t be entirely about money, the reality of modern college basketball is impossible to overlook. A massive NIL offer could play a major role in where he lands if he decides not to stay in the NBA Draft.
For Kentucky fans, the situation has quickly turned from optimism to urgency.
Landing Momcilovic could transform the Wildcats into a legitimate national title contender heading into next season. Missing out, especially after coming this far in the pursuit, would leave major questions about whether Kentucky did enough to capitalize on its momentum this offseason.
Now the countdown begins — and Big Blue Nation is waiting to see whether Mark Pope can close the deal before another Wildcats program steals the spotlight.
