The NCAA could be preparing to make a major change that may directly impact Kentucky basketball — and Big Blue Nation is already paying close attention.
As college athletics continue to evolve, the NCAA is reportedly cracking down on players with professional experience overseas. According to a report from Sports Illustrated’s Kevin Sweeney, new eligibility guidelines could affect international athletes who previously competed in professional leagues before coming to college basketball.
The proposed rule states that any prospective student-athlete who “entered an agreement with, competed on or received compensation from a team that participates in a league with minimum compensation that exceeds actual and necessary expenses” may not have their eligibility reinstated.
If the rule is approved and enforced immediately, Kentucky newcomer Ousmane N’Diaye could potentially be affected. The same concern also applies to women’s basketball addition Ajsa Sivka, who also played professionally in Europe before committing to Kentucky.
For Mark Pope, this would create a massive problem at the worst possible time.
Kentucky is already facing uncertainty in the frontcourt as Malachi Moreno continues weighing his NBA Draft decision, while Milan Momcilovic remains one of the Wildcats’ biggest remaining targets. If N’Diaye were suddenly ruled ineligible, Pope’s roster depth could take a serious hit heading into the season.
N’Diaye was expected to provide size, experience, and valuable frontcourt minutes for the Wildcats. Losing him would leave Kentucky dangerously thin inside and could force Pope to aggressively pursue more roster help late in the offseason.
On the women’s side, Sivka was expected to be a major contributor as well, bringing international experience and versatility to a young roster.
At this point, there is still uncertainty surrounding how — or when — the NCAA would enforce the proposed guidelines. It also remains unclear whether already-signed players would be protected or grandfathered into the current system.
For now, Kentucky fans can only wait and monitor the situation closely as the NCAA’s latest move could have major consequences for both Wildcats programs.
