The Kentucky Wildcats received a major offseason boost as transfer center Franck Kepnang officially learned he will be eligible to play next season.
After needing an NCAA waiver to participate in what will be his seventh year of college basketball, Kepnang has reportedly been cleared to suit up for Mark Pope’s Wildcats. The decision comes at a critical time as Kentucky continues rebuilding its roster following a frustrating 2025 season filled with injuries, inconsistent chemistry, and lineup concerns.
Pope and his staff entered the offseason determined to improve roster balance and add players who better fit the system. One of the key additions was Kepnang, a former Washington Huskies big man known primarily for his defensive impact.
When healthy, Kepnang has shown he can completely change games around the rim. Last season, he averaged 2.1 blocks per game while playing roughly 22 minutes per contest. His size, shot-blocking ability, and rebounding immediately give Kentucky another valuable frontcourt presence heading into next season.
Although his offensive game remains somewhat limited, his defensive presence alone could make him one of the Wildcats’ most important additions.
The timing of the eligibility news is especially important because Kentucky is still waiting on Malachi Moreno’s NBA Draft decision. If Moreno returns, Kentucky’s center rotation suddenly looks much stronger and deeper. If he stays in the draft, Kepnang could be counted on to take on an even larger role right away.
Either way, Mark Pope officially has another experienced big man available — and Kentucky fans now have even more reason to believe this roster is starting to come together at the perfect time.
