Kentucky’s frontcourt situation for the 2026–27 season just received a major update, as transfer center Franck Kepnang has officially been granted eligibility for his final year of college basketball. After receiving multiple NCAA medical hardship waivers, the veteran big man is now cleared to suit up for Mark Pope’s Wildcats.
Kepnang, a 6-foot-11, 253-pound center, arrives in Lexington following a long and difficult college career heavily impacted by injuries. Despite those setbacks, he has shown strong production whenever he has been on the floor, most recently appearing in 27 games for Washington.
In that season, Kepnang averaged 6.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game, finishing among the Big Ten’s top shot-blockers. His game is built around physicality, rim protection, and effort plays—exactly the type of interior presence that doesn’t always dominate headlines but often changes games.
For Kentucky, his arrival helps stabilize a key area of need. While the Wildcats are still monitoring roster decisions such as Malachi Moreno’s NBA Draft status, Kepnang provides an experienced and dependable option in the frontcourt rotation.
He also brings a bit of built-in chemistry with Kentucky guard Zoom Diallo, as the two previously shared the court at Washington. That familiarity could help him transition more smoothly into Mark Pope’s system and the demands of SEC play.
Kepnang isn’t expected to be a primary scoring option, but that’s not his assignment. His value lies in defense, rebounding, and providing quality minutes off the bench when Kentucky needs size and toughness inside.
For a roster aiming to strike a balance between talent and experience, Kepnang represents a steady, low-risk addition who can anchor the paint and support Kentucky’s frontcourt depth heading into a pivotal season.
