Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Pope may have quietly made one of the smartest additions of the offseason by bringing in former Washington Huskies center Franck Kepnang.
The 6-foot-11 big man is expected to provide valuable depth in the frontcourt for Kentucky heading into next season. While Kepnang still needs a waiver to secure another year of eligibility, there is growing confidence that approval will not become an obstacle.
During the 2025-26 season at Washington, Kepnang averaged 6.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game. Before joining the Huskies, he also spent time with the Oregon Ducks. Injuries have unfortunately defined much of his college career, limiting him to 111 total games across six seasons.
If Malachi Moreno ultimately withdraws from the NBA Draft and returns to Lexington, Kepnang is projected to serve as his primary backup. That pairing could give Kentucky a dependable rotation at center.
Kepnang brings size, strength, and physicality — qualities Kentucky occasionally lacked in the paint last season. At 253 pounds, the veteran center has the frame and defensive presence needed to compete immediately in the SEC.
Another factor working in Kentucky’s favor is Kepnang’s familiarity with new Wildcats point guard Zoom Diallo. The two spent the past two seasons together at Washington, developing chemistry that could translate quickly in Lexington, especially in pick-and-roll situations and transition offense.
Kentucky struggled at times last season with rebounding consistency and interior toughness. Kepnang’s arrival directly addresses those concerns.
While he may not become one of the SEC’s elite centers statistically, he fits the exact mold of an effective rotational big who understands his role and impacts winning through defense, rebounding, rim protection, and physical play.
Former Kentucky big man Brandon Garrison showed flashes last season, but the Wildcats often needed more force and consistency inside. Kepnang’s veteran experience and defensive mindset could help stabilize that area.
If Moreno returns, Kentucky could enter next season with a strong one-two combination at center, giving Coach Pope flexibility and reliability in the frontcourt rotation. For a team looking to contend in the SEC, adding a player like Kepnang may end up being more important than many initially expected.
