Kentucky head coach Mark Pope still hopes to send the Wildcats on a summer basketball tour before the 2026 season, even after the program’s original plans were forced to change.
Earlier this offseason, Pope revealed that Kentucky had been preparing for an overseas trip designed to help the team build chemistry and gain extra experience ahead of the upcoming season. The Wildcats had reportedly planned to travel to Jerusalem, but ongoing tensions in the Middle East have now made that destination impossible.
Despite the setback, Pope has made it clear he still wants the trip to happen.
During a recent social media Q&A with Kentucky fans, Pope asked Big Blue Nation for ideas on possible new destinations for the Wildcats’ summer basketball experience. The Kentucky coach emphasized how important these trips can be, especially in today’s college basketball landscape where transfer portal movement has made roster turnover a yearly challenge.
With teams constantly rebuilding, summer tours provide valuable opportunities for players to spend time together away from campus distractions. Coaches also gain additional practice sessions and live competition against outside opponents before the regular season begins.
For Kentucky, that could be especially important.
The Wildcats dealt with chemistry and cohesion issues early last season as new players adjusted to Pope’s system and learned how to play together. A summer tour could help speed up that process this time around while allowing the coaching staff to evaluate the roster in competitive settings.
Trips like these also create opportunities for team bonding in unfamiliar environments, something many coaches believe can strengthen locker room chemistry long before the season officially tips off.
Possible destinations could include Europe or even Canada, both of which would allow Kentucky to continue pursuing the experience despite the change in plans. Pope could also potentially connect the trip with future international recruiting opportunities for the program.
As Kentucky’s roster continues to take shape and transfer portal activity slows down, an announcement regarding a summer tour may not be far away. For now, Pope remains focused on finding the right place for the Wildcats to compete — and giving fans an early glimpse of the new-look team before the season begins.
