Kentucky thought it had secured a commitment from the nation’s No. 1 high school recruit, Tyran Stokes—but a premature reaction from the coaching staff quickly turned that confidence into an awkward storyline.
As Stokes built anticipation for his decision with a post announcing his 6:30 PM EST reveal on Inside the NBA, Wildcats assistant coach Mo Williams responded just minutes later with an excited “Let’s gooooooooooooo.” The reply didn’t go unnoticed. In fact, it immediately sparked speculation that Kentucky believed the recruitment was already wrapped up.
There was just one issue—Stokes hadn’t made his decision public yet.
Williams eventually deleted the post, but by then, screenshots had already circulated. What may have been intended as a celebratory moment instead became a source of embarrassment, especially after Stokes ultimately chose Kansas. Jayhawks fans were quick to capitalize, turning the situation into a talking point across social media.
The situation also raised questions beyond optics. NCAA rules strictly limit how programs can publicly engage with recruits before they officially sign. According to Bylaw 13.10.1.9, staff members are not allowed to comment on unsigned recruits in a public setting. Williams’ post, even if brief, may have crossed that boundary.
Whether any formal action will be taken remains uncertain, but the incident added an uncomfortable layer to Kentucky’s recruiting loss.
Meanwhile, Kansas emerged with the biggest prize of the 2026 class. Stokes confirmed his decision on national television, citing his strong relationship with head coach Bill Self as a key factor.
“He’s been there from the beginning,” Stokes said. “He’s always believed in me and guided me through the whole process.”
In the end, Kansas landed the top prospect, while Kentucky was left dealing not just with the loss—but with how it unfolded in the spotlight.
