Denzel Aberdeen is headed back to the Florida Gators. The 6-foot-5 guard announced Friday, April 10, 2026, that he plans to re-enroll at the University of Florida for the 2026-27 season. Aberdeen still has to get a waiver from the NCAA to be able to play for a 5th season in college basketball.
Aberdeen is an Orlando native who spent his first three college seasons at Florida from 2022-2025. He was part of the Gators’ 2025 national championship team, averaging 7.7 points and 19.8 minutes that season. He had back-to-back 20-point games during the title run and scored 12 points in Florida’s Sweet 16 win over Maryland.
After winning the title, Aberdeen entered the transfer portal and transferred to Kentucky for the 2025-26 season. Florida and Aberdeen failed to agree on an NIL deal, and he sought a bigger role after playing behind Walter Clayton Jr., Will Richard, and Alijah Martin.
At Kentucky, Aberdeen started 35 of 36 games as a senior. He averaged career highs of 13.5 points, 3.4 assists, and 2.5 rebounds while shooting 36.3% from three. He had 27 double-figure scoring games and led the Wildcats in scoring eight times. Florida beat Kentucky in all three meetings this season. Aberdeen scored 19 points and had four assists in his return to Gainesville on Feb. 22, added 15 points, five rebounds and four assists at Rupp Arena, and put up 17 points in the SEC Tournament.
Aberdeen re-entered the transfer portal on April 7, 2026. He announced his intent to return to Florida on Instagram Friday: “I’m excited to announce that I’m planning to re-enroll at the University of Florida to finish my undergraduate degree. Thankful for the opportunity to finish my academic journey back home at the place where it started. Go Gators!”
Because Aberdeen played only 12 games for 41 minutes as a freshman at Florida in 2022-23, he is seeking an NCAA waiver for a fifth year of eligibility. If the waiver is granted, he would rejoin Todd Golden’s roster with a season of SEC starting experience. Golden said after Aberdeen left for Kentucky, “Losing Denzel Aberdeen was tough but we wish him nothing but the best”.
The transfer portal window closes May 6, 2026.
