The Kentucky Wildcats may have advanced, but not without controversy—and plenty of backlash from fans.
Coming into their NCAA Tournament first-round matchup, Kentucky was expected to handle Santa Clara with ease. Instead, the Broncos made it clear early that they weren’t backing down. After a tightly contested first half, Santa Clara took a slim 31-29 lead into the break, setting the tone for what would become a nail-biter.
The drama peaked in the final seconds of regulation. With just two seconds remaining, Santa Clara’s Allen Graves drilled a deep three-pointer to give the Broncos a 73-70 lead, seemingly putting them on the brink of a massive upset. But Kentucky responded in stunning fashion. After a quick inbound, Otega Oweh raced up the floor and launched a desperation shot that found the net at the buzzer, tying the game at 73 and forcing overtime.
Kentucky carried that momentum into the extra period, outscoring Santa Clara 16-11 to secure an 89-84 victory and avoid an early tournament exit.
Still, the thrilling finish was overshadowed by controversy. Many fans and analysts questioned officiating decisions in the closing moments of regulation. Some pointed to what they believed was a missed timeout call from Santa Clara head coach Herb Sendek before Kentucky’s game-tying shot. Others criticized what they saw as inconsistent officiating, particularly in critical late-game situations.
The debate quickly spread across social media, with some claiming the calls favored Kentucky, while others expressed frustration over how such pivotal moments were handled.
Despite the noise, the Wildcats move on—but the ending of this game will be talked about for far longer than the final score.
Kentucky will now prepare to face the winner of the matchup between No. 2 Iowa State and No. 15 Tennessee State in the next round.
