Kentucky’s tough stretch continued on Saturday as the Wildcats fell 84–77 to Florida, and head coach Mark Pope didn’t hide the frustration after the game. Speaking to the media, Pope acknowledged that his team is still trying to figure things out as the season enters its most critical phase.
One issue Pope pointed to again was fatigue, something he believes has been affecting the Wildcats’ decision-making on the floor in recent games. According to the Kentucky coach, tired legs have led to costly mistakes at key moments.
“We are just trying to figure out how to manage this,” Pope said. “We make poor decisions when we are tired on the floor. We just do. We make poor decisions when we are tired on the floor. We are trying to find out how to ameliorate that and fix it, and that’s been a problem for us the last couple of games.”
The loss to Florida added to a difficult run for Kentucky, raising concerns among fans about the team’s momentum heading into postseason play. However, Pope is choosing to focus on the opportunities ahead rather than dwelling on the setbacks.
With the SEC Tournament approaching, the Wildcats could potentially face a demanding schedule that includes playing multiple games in consecutive days. Pope was asked how he plans to prepare his team for the possibility of five games in five days.
His answer was simple: take it one game at a time.
“The great thing about the tournament is it’s one game,” Pope said. “There is only one game. It’s one game. We will talk about one game. That’s all it is in the postseason—it’s just one game.”
Pope emphasized that Kentucky’s focus will be entirely on its opening SEC Tournament matchup on Wednesday.
“So we are going to prepare for one game on Wednesday and we are going to put our whole heart and soul into it,” he added. “That’s the only thing that matters to us, and that’s the beauty of the postseason.”
Despite the recent struggles, Pope remains confident that the postseason offers a fresh start for his team. In tournament play, momentum can shift quickly, and Kentucky will be hoping to reset and find its rhythm when the SEC Tournament tips off.
