Kentucky basketball has struggled in recent years with recruiting and roster management, and the program may be preparing a bold solution: hiring a General Manager.
The Wildcats’ 2026 recruiting class has underwhelmed, and past roster decisions — including overpaying players to address defensive weaknesses — have left head coach Mark Pope juggling more than ever. With other top programs, like Duke, finding success with GMs, Pope was asked whether Kentucky is considering adding one to the staff.
“That’s been an ongoing conversation for us,” Pope told Tom Leach on his weekly radio show. “We’ve had a lot of discussions about finding the right space for a GM in our program. Some teams have gone this route with varying levels of success, and we’re talking about it on a weekly basis.”
The role of a GM at Kentucky would likely focus on recruiting, roster construction, and navigating relationships with agents. Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68 highlighted why this position is crucial
“You need someone devoted to recruiting who’s plugged into the agents and constantly watching tape on potential players — especially mid-major prospects,” Goodman said. “Kentucky shouldn’t be overpaying. They overpaid on nearly everyone on this roster. A GM would help Pope focus on the right players and stay ahead when the transfer portal opens.
Kentucky has already made adjustments this season, but a GM could provide a long-term solution, keeping Pope from being stretched too thin and ensuring the program can compete for top talent efficiently.
With elite programs across the country taking proactive steps in recruiting and roster management, this potential hire could be the move that finally gives Kentucky a decisive edge.
