As Thanksgiving approaches, Kentucky junior center Brandon Garrison is making sure some families in Lexington have a holiday meal. On Saturday, Garrison visited God’s Pantry Food Bank, donating 30 turkeys and helping pack and deliver meals to families across Fayette County.
Garrison was joined by his mother, Toni, who shared a heartfelt reflection on their visit. “As we handed out boxes and walked through the warehouse, memories of my own childhood and early years raising my children came flooding back,” Toni wrote. “I silently thanked God for guiding our hearts to a place where we can now bless others.”
During the visit, the Garrisons met Michael Halligan, CEO of God’s Pantry Food Bank, and Toni expressed gratitude for the warm welcome. “From the moment we arrived, everyone welcomed us with such warmth and kindness,” she said. “The compassion in his eyes truly touched me and will be coin-stamped in our hearts.”
Garrison’s volunteer work came the morning after Kentucky’s win over Loyola Maryland, a game where he came off the bench for the first time this season. Freshman Malachi Moreno took the starting spot, but Garrison didn’t let it affect his performance. He recorded a career-high 11 rebounds, along with six points, one assist, and one steal in 20 minutes.
Kentucky head coach Mark Pope praised Garrison’s response. “Maybe the best story of the night is BG’s response,” Pope said. “He’s an 11-rebound guy, and he went out and was unbelievable in his 20 minutes off the bench. It’s a great example of learning and holding onto that lesson.”
With his efforts on and off the court, Garrison is setting a strong example for his teammates and fans alike. Those looking to follow his lead and give back this holiday season can visit God’s Pantry Food Bank’s website.
