The Dallas Mavericks aren’t handing their newest rookie the keys to the offense just yet — but his role is already sparking huge debate.
According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, the rookie is expected to start immediately in Jason Kidd’s lineup for the 2025-26 season. Still, with 10-time All-Star Anthony Davis leading the way and Kyrie Irving likely returning from a torn ACL before the playoffs, he won’t be the team’s go-to scoring option right away.
“An instant starter, but not the one carrying the team,” MacMahon explained, pointing to the veteran presence surrounding him — especially Davis, who arrived in the blockbuster trade that shipped Luka Doncic out of Dallas.
The Mavericks’ playoff push could hinge on Irving’s health and whether he regains his All-Star form.
But not everyone believes the rookie’s role should be limited. The Athletic’s Law Murray says Kidd should hand him the playmaking duties in Irving’s absence — just like Kidd did with Giannis Antetokounmpo in Milwaukee — instead of relying on D’Angelo Russell, whose ball-handling struggles were glaring last year.
Whether he becomes the focal point of the offense or a dangerous supporting weapon, one thing is clear — Dallas is betting big on their young star to make an immediate impact.
