Jon Scheyer isn’t holding back this summer — and Duke fans are split.
Sources close to the program say this year’s offseason practices have been nothing short of intense, with the second-year head coach sending a clear message to his roster: You earn everything here.
According to insiders, Scheyer has made several changes to the way summer practices operate. Gone are the light, instructional walkthroughs. In their place? Full-contact scrimmages, no-nonsense accountability drills, and public call-outs when effort dips even slightly.
> “He stopped one drill mid-way, walked right onto the court, and told a starter, ‘That’s not Duke basketball,’” one observer reported. “The gym got real quiet after that.”
But it’s not just Scheyer.
Assistant coaches Chris Carrawell and Jai Lucas have turned up the heat as well. Players have been seen running extra suicides, repeating defensive sets until they’re perfect, and even sitting out reps if they don’t meet the staff’s energy demands.
And while some fans love the new edge…
> “This is the fire we’ve been needing,” one fan tweeted. “Duke’s back to being HUNGRY.”
…others wonder if it’s too much, too soon.
> “They’re young. It’s June,” another fan posted. “Let them develop without breaking them down.”
Still, most agree: Scheyer is on a mission. After an up-and-down season that didn’t end the way Duke Nation hoped, he’s not leaving anything to chance this time.
This summer isn’t just about getting better — it’s about building a new identity.
And if you’re not ready for war?
You probably won’t see the court in Durham this season.
What do YOU think?
Has Jon Scheyer taken it too far — or is this exactly what Duke needs to reclaim its throne?
