Kentucky head coach Mark Pope already had high expectations for Jasper Johnson and Malachi Moreno — two in-state stars turning heads even before suiting up in blue and white. But after coaching them at the USA Basketball U19 camp in Colorado Springs, even he was stunned.
Pope, who served on the coaching staff for the 2025 USA Men’s U19 National Team, got his first official look at Johnson and Moreno in action — and what he saw left him nearly speechless.
> “It was awesome because it was the first time I’ve been allowed to coach them,” Pope told KSR. “That was the best part. It’s like a sneak peek into what’s going to be. Both those guys… what a show they put on. They were both incredible. I mean, like jaw-dropping great.”
While Moreno exited the camp early due to a minor injury, both players made a major impression. Johnson showcased his elite scoring instincts and smooth playmaking, while Moreno dominated the glass and anchored the defense like a seasoned veteran.
This wasn’t just a scrimmage — it was a high-level battleground against the nation’s best young talent. And both Wildcats rose to the occasion.
> “The chance to be in some live play, some competition against other players and other great players… I loved that part,” Pope added.
More than just a proud coach moment, this was a sign of what’s coming to Lexington — and fast. With the summer workouts already underway, early feedback has been glowing. Add in Pope’s first-hand praise, and it’s clear: Johnson and Moreno aren’t just good — they could be program-changing.
And what makes this duo even more special? They’re both Kentucky kids, continuing a proud tradition of Bluegrass-born talent making their mark in Rupp Arena.
Wildcats fans, buckle up. The future is local — and it’s looking jaw-dropping.
