Ohio State University has announced that NBA superstar and philanthropist LeBron James will be awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Public Service, recognizing his exceptional contributions to education, community development, and social justice initiatives.
The university’s Board of Trustees approved the honorary degree as part of the 2025 commencement celebrations, where James will be formally honored. The accolade places the four-time NBA champion and Akron native among a prestigious list of individuals who have made significant impacts in public service and civic engagement.
“LeBron James represents the power of using one’s platform to create lasting and meaningful change,” said Ohio State University President Walter “Ted” Carter Jr. “Through his LeBron James Family Foundation, he has transformed the lives of countless young people, expanded educational access, and invested deeply in his hometown of Akron and beyond. His work aligns with our university’s mission to uplift communities and advance opportunity.”
James, widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players in history, has long used his influence to champion causes far beyond the court. His foundation has launched initiatives like the “I PROMISE School,” a public elementary school in Akron that supports at-risk youth with a holistic educational approach. He has also funded scholarships, provided transitional housing for families, and invested in workforce development and community wellness programs.
In a statement, James expressed his gratitude for the recognition:
“To be honored by Ohio State University, a place that means so much to the people of Ohio, is truly humbling. I’ve always believed in giving back and lifting up others, and this degree is a reminder of what’s possible when we invest in our communities.”
The ceremony will take place at Ohio Stadium during the university’s spring commencement, with tens of thousands of graduates and their families expected to attend. James is also slated to deliver brief remarks, offering words of encouragement to the Class of 2025.
Ohio State’s honorary degrees are awarded to individuals whose achievements exemplify excellence and align with the institution’s values. Previous recipients include world leaders, scientists, artists, and humanitarians.
With this recognition, LeBron James not only adds another accolade to his illustrious career but also reinforces his legacy as a transformative force off the court—a champion of education, equity, and public service.
