Auburn Tigers head coach Bruce Pearl couldn’t resist taking a lighthearted jab at Mark Pope and the Kentucky Wildcats after his team’s impressive performance at Rupp Arena.
The Tigers’ star player, Miles Kelly, was on fire, hitting several clutch shots to lead Auburn to a hard-fought victory. Pearl was beaming with pride after the game, and he couldn’t help but poke a little fun at the Wildcats’ expense.
“I’m not saying Mark Pope is a great coach or anything, but I think he might want to work on his ‘stop Miles Kelly’ game plan,” Pearl joked in the post-game press conference.
Pearl’s playful jab was met with laughter from the media in attendance, and it’s clear that he was just trying to have a little fun after a big win.
Despite the lighthearted nature of Pearl’s comment, it’s clear that the Auburn coach has a healthy respect for Pope and the Wildcats. “Kentucky is a great program with a rich tradition,” Pearl said. “We’re just happy to come out on top tonight.”
The win was a big one for the Tigers, who are looking to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. With Kelly leading the way, Auburn is certainly a team to watch in the coming weeks.
