The Kentucky Wildcats’ narrow 85-84 victory over the Oklahoma Sooners has left many in the college basketball world reeling, and it’s all due to one highly contentious call.
With just seconds left on the clock, Oklahoma’s Jeremiah Fears appeared to be fouled by Kentucky’s Otega Oweh, but the referees failed to blow their whistles. Instead, they allowed play to continue, and Oweh sank the game-winning shot.
The Sooners’ bench erupted in outrage, with coaches and players alike arguing that the foul should have been called. Even some Kentucky fans were left scratching their heads, wondering how the referees could have missed such a blatant infraction.
The controversy has sparked a heated debate on social media, with many calling for the NCAA to review the play and potentially overturn the result.
That’s a foul 100 times out of 100,”tweeted one outraged fan. “The refs completely blew it.
Others were more measured in their criticism, but still felt that the call was questionable.
“I’m not saying it was a foul, but it was definitely a close call,” wrote another fan. “You can’t blame Oklahoma for feeling robbed.
The loss is a tough pill for the Sooners to swallow, especially given the circumstances. They’ll have to regroup and refocus if they hope to make a deep run in the tournament.
As for the Wildcats, they’ll take the win and move on, but they know they dodged a bullet.
“We got lucky,” admitted Otega Oweh in the post-game press conference. “But we’ll take it.”
