The Kentucky Wildcats pulled off an emotional 83-82 win over the Oklahoma Sooners in Norman. Sadly, it got a little too emotional for some fans.
Following the thrilling win that saw the lead change three times in the final minute, Kentucky players attempted to leave the court in hopes of celebrating in the postgame locker room.
Some Oklahoma fan decided to throw a beer can at the Wildcats, nearly hitting sophomore center Brandon Garrison. Garrison got the last laugh, finishing with 12 points, four rebounds, three steals, and three blocks, including the game-sealing stuff in the closing seconds.
But more importantly, it appears no one was injured by the action of a Sooners fan who got carried away.
Someone threw a beer can at Kentucky players as they left the court. Nearly hit Brandon Garrison in the head.
Mark Pope was understandably furious about the incident, and he didn’t hold back in his post-game comments.
“I’m just disappointed that our players had to go through that,” Pope said. “They deserve better than that. Our fans deserve better than that. It’s just unacceptable behavior.”
Pope also praised his players for keeping their cool in the face of adversity.
“I’m proud of our guys for not reacting,” Pope said. “It’s not easy to keep your cool when someone is throwing a beer can at you. But our guys did a great job of staying focused and keeping their composure.”
The incident was just one of several tense moments in a game that was filled with drama and excitement.
In the end, it was the Wildcats who emerged victorious, thanks to a game-winning shot by Otega Oweh.
But the real story of the game was the unacceptable behavior of the Oklahoma fans, and the classy response of Mark Pope and the Kentucky players.
