In what was an instant classic of a basketball game, the Kentucky Wildcats were able to outlast the Oklahoma Sooners in an 83-82 win for Mark Pope’s bunch.
Kentucky needed every last ounce of fight to pull this one out. The game was within one score for the final eight minutes, and the lead changed five times in the final 2:02 of regulation, including three in the final minute.
Otega Oweh scored the game-winning field goal, while Brandon Garrison made the game-sealing block on the other end.
As you can imagine, this was an emotionally charged game that ended in euphoria for Kentucky but devastation for a Sooners team firmly on the NCAA Tournament bubble.
When Garrison made that game-clinching block, he absolutely got in the face of several Sooners players and nearly started a scuffle as the final seconds ticked off the clock.
Thankfully for Garrison, the actions in question appeared to happen after the final horn sounded, which means they should not have resulted in a technical foul and free throws for the Sooners.
However, because it happened so close to the end, the referee apparently reviewed the play for a potential game-changing technical on Garrison, according to Oklahoma head coach Porter Moser.
Had those actions happened before the final horn, it’s not hard to see why the officials could have called Garrison for a technical.
Thankfully, you can hear the horn sounding right as Garrison gets in the face of the Oklahoma players.
Football is a game of inches. On this night, basketball was a game of milliseconds.
