Josh Sweat’s impressive performance in Super Bowl LVII, where he recorded 2.5 sacks, three tackles for loss, and three quarterback hits, has made him a highly sought-after free agent. The Detroit Lions, in particular, should be interested in signing Sweat to pair him with Aidan Hutchinson.
Sweat’s stats from the regular season, including eight sacks and 54 quarterback pressures, demonstrate his value as an edge rusher. While he may not have the same level of recognition as some of the top edge rushers in the league, Sweat is also a skilled run defender, which enhances his value.
Spotrac projects Sweat’s contract value to be around $18.8 million per year on a three-year deal, totaling $56.46 million. While this may be a significant investment, Sweat’s age (he’ll turn 28 in late March) and the lack of elite free agent pass rushers this year make him an attractive target.
The Lions, who have the resources to sign Sweat, should be interested in bringing him on board. Sweat’s representatives, Drew Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha, will likely seek to maximize his contract value. Sweat himself has emphasized the importance of finding the right situation, stating that “money’s important, sure, but I want to be in the right situation.”
While the Lions may face competition for Sweat’s services, they should be a strong contender to sign him. Pairing Sweat with Hutchinson would give the Lions a formidable edge rushing duo, making them a more competitive team in the NFC.
