Back in late September, I wrote about how the Detroit Lions got a little too overconfident about their edge rusher depth in the offseason and how it was coming back to bite them. It wasn’t the most well-received thing I’ve written, but I think Lions fans are agreeing with me now that the season is all said and done.
That’s because the Philadelphia Eagles showed in their Super Bowl win over the Chiefs on Sunday night how important it is to have a strong pass rush and a deep defensive line. Six sacks on Patrick Mahomes and just 49 total rushing yards allowed. It was dominance in every sense of the word.
The Lions have been pretty good at run-stopping and putting pressure on quarterbacks, but getting home and constantly disrupting quarterbacks has been an issue. This is why the Lions need to go all in on making that defensive line vaunted this offseason.
The start is to go all in on getting Myles Garret to the Lions. It’s the most simple move that you can try to make. Garrett and Hutchinson rushing off the edge together with McNeill coming up the middle and Reader eating space, that defensive line is instantly the best starting group in the NFL.
It just can’t be about the price anymore. If the Lions are serious about winning the Super Bowl, they need to make a Super Bowl-winning move. That is why going all in on Garrett and offering the Browns a significant package worth of picks to reset their franchise is just the way to go.
We worked up a trade package last week and I still think it’s more than worth it for Browns to accept. They would get two first-round picks, a third-round pick, and Hendon Hooker for Garrett and Dorian Thompson-Robinson.
