Ryan Day Opens Up About Chip Kelly’s Departure: A Bittersweet End to a Championship Season
In the wake of Ohio State’s national championship win, the Buckeyes’ coaching staff has undergone significant changes. First, defensive coordinator Jim Knowles departed for Penn State, and now, offensive coordinator Chip Kelly is leaving to join the Las Vegas Raiders. While Kelly’s exit may come as a disappointment to fans, head coach Ryan Day has taken a philosophical approach to the news.
Speaking on “The Joel Klatt Show,” Day reflected on Kelly’s decision, revealing that the two had discussed the possibility of Kelly’s departure after a successful season. “We had a really good group here, and the dream would be to win a national championship,” Day said. “Then, he decides whether he wants to stay or have an opportunity to go to the NFL. It’s exactly what happened.”
Day’s comments highlight the close relationship he shares with Kelly, one that extends beyond their professional partnership. The two have a deep respect for each other, and Day is clearly grateful for the time they spent together on the Buckeyes’ coaching staff.
Under Kelly’s guidance, Ohio State’s offense thrived, finishing the season tied for 12th in points per game (35.7) and tied for 28th in total yards per game (429.4). While Kelly’s departure will undoubtedly be felt, Day is confident that the team will continue to succeed.
With plenty of time to find a replacement before the 2025 season kicks off on August 30 against Texas, Day will be focused on identifying the right candidate to fill Kelly’s shoes. As he navigates this transition, Day can take pride in the knowledge that the Buckeyes’ championship season was a true team effort, with players and coaches working together towards a common goal.
