The Pittsburgh Steelers are considering extending the contract of star pass rusher T.J. Watt, who is set to enter the final year of his current deal. Watt’s contract carries a $30 million cap hit for 2025, leading to speculation that the Steelers might part ways with him.
However, Steelers owner Art Rooney quickly dismissed that idea, stating that it’s “unlikely” the team would move on from Watt. “He’s certainly been one of the real, solid pieces we have on that defense,” Rooney said. “I think he’s the kind of guy we want to have in the locker room going forward.”
Rooney also expressed interest in extending Watt’s contract, which would likely reduce his cap hit and provide long-term security for the pass rusher. Watt signed a four-year, $112 million deal with the Steelers in 2021.
Watt has been an elite performer for the Steelers, compiling 30.5 sacks and 38 tackles for loss over the past two seasons. He led the NFL with six forced fumbles in 2024.
The Steelers may need to consider the market for edge rushers, as players like Micah Parsons, Myles Garrett, and Trey Hendrickson could reset the market this offseason. Watt’s current average annual value of $28 million ranks fourth among edge rushers.
Watt has expressed his desire to remain with the Steelers for the rest of his career, but he’s uncertain about how long he plans to play in the NFL. As a result, his next contract could potentially be the final deal of his career.
