The Pittsburgh Steelers’ outside linebacker position is one of the most critical on the team, and it could be in for a significant shake-up if T.J. Watt is traded or leaves the team.
According to sources close to the team, the Steelers are exploring options for Watt, who has been the anchor of the team’s pass rush for the past several seasons. Watt, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, has been a dominant force on the field, and his departure would leave a massive void.
“T.J. Watt is a game-changer,” said Steelers defensive coordinator, Brian Flores. “He’s a guy who can take over a game and make plays that few others can make. If he were to leave, we’d have to adjust our scheme and find ways to replace his production.”
If Watt were to leave the Steelers, the team would likely rely on Alex Highsmith to take on an even more prominent role. Highsmith had a solid 2023 season, recording 7 sacks and 69 total pressures, and has shown himself to be a capable pass rusher.
“Alex Highsmith is a talented player who has shown he can make plays,” said Flores. “He’s got a lot of potential, and we’re excited to see him continue to grow and develop.”
In addition to Highsmith, the Steelers also have a few other options at outside linebacker, including Markus Golden and Nick Herbig. Golden, a veteran backup, contributed 3 sacks and 13 pressures in limited snaps last season, while Herbig, a rookie, impressed with 3 sacks and 2 forced fumbles in just 191 snaps.
While the Steelers have some talented players at outside linebacker, Watt’s potential departure would still be a significant blow to the team’s pass rush. The Steelers will need to find a way to replace Watt’s production if they hope to remain competitive in the AFC North.
The Steelers are expected to explore options for Watt in the coming weeks, and it’s possible that he could be traded or released before the start of the 2025 season. If that happens, the Steelers will need to be prepared to adjust their scheme and find new ways to generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
