The Pittsburgh Steelers’ outside linebacker position could be in for a significant shake-up if T.J. Watt is traded or leaves the team. Watt, who had an incredible 2023 season with 19 sacks, is undoubtedly the anchor of the Steelers’ pass rush. His presence on the field is a game-changer, and his ability to get to the quarterback is unmatched.
If Watt were to depart, the Steelers would likely rely on Alex Highsmith to take on an even more prominent role. Highsmith had a solid 2023 season, recording 7 sacks and 69 total pressures, and has shown himself to be a capable pass rusher. He has the skills and the talent to be a top-notch outside linebacker, and the Steelers would likely count on him to step up and fill the void left by Watt’s departure.
In addition to Highsmith, the Steelers also have a few other key players at outside linebacker who could contribute to the team’s pass rush. Markus Golden, a veteran backup, contributed 3 sacks and 13 pressures in limited snaps last season. He’s set to become a free agent, but could return to the Steelers on a one-year deal. Nick Herbig, a rookie, impressed with 3 sacks and 2 forced fumbles in just 191 snaps. He’s expected to take on a larger role in the team’s pass rush rotation.
While the Steelers have some talented players at outside linebacker, Watt’s potential departure would still be a significant blow to the team’s pass rush. Watt is a dominant force on the field, and his absence would be felt deeply. It will be interesting to see how the Steelers choose to address this position in the offseason. Will they try to sign a free agent to replace Watt, or will they rely on their current players to step up and fill the void? Only time will tell.
