The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a move that has flown under the radar, but could potentially pay off in a big way. According to sources, the Steelers have signed former New England Patriots wide receiver, Jakobi Meyers, to a two-year deal.
The signing of Meyers may not have generated the same level of excitement as some of the other free agent moves made by the Steelers this offseason, but it could prove to be a savvy move by the team. Meyers, a 26-year-old wide receiver, has been a consistent contributor for the Patriots over the past four seasons, hauling in 168 receptions for 2,048 yards and 8 touchdowns.
Meyers’ ability to line up in the slot and create separation from defenders could make him a valuable asset to the Steelers’ offense. He’s also a reliable target who can make plays in traffic, which could help to take some pressure off of quarterback Kenny Pickett.
The Steelers’ decision to sign Meyers could also be a sign that they’re looking to move on from wide receiver Diontae Johnson, who has been the subject of trade rumors this offseason. If that’s the case, Meyers could potentially step into a starting role and provide a similar level of production to what Johnson has given the team in the past.
Steelers fans are already buzzing about the potential impact that Meyers could have on the team’s offense. “This is a great signing!” tweeted @SteelersNation. “Meyers is a talented receiver who can make plays in the slot. He’s going to be a great addition to our offense!”
