Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Pope gave an encouraging update on Jayden Quaintance, fueling speculation that the sophomore forward could finally make his season debut as soon as this Saturday against St. John’s.
Quaintance, who transferred from Arizona State this offseason, has been sidelined all year recovering from a torn ACL he suffered last February. But Pope says the forward is making significant strides in practice.
“He had a good practice on Tuesday. First time ever he crossed half court in some drill work, so that was good,” Pope said Thursday. “We’ll see how he is today. He’s making incredible progress. It’s kind of a day-by-day thing. Once he’s confident, ready, and healthy, we’ll roll.”
Pope praised Quaintance for his dedication off the court as well. “He’s done an unbelievable job in his rehab and understanding our system. Every day gives us a clearer picture of what he can contribute.”
At Arizona State last season, Quaintance averaged 9.4 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game, while shooting 52.5% from the field. Defensively, he was a force with 2.6 blocks and 1.1 steals per game, earning All-Big 12 Defensive Team and All-Freshman Team honors.
If he takes the court Saturday, Quaintance will likely have a minutes restriction, but Pope believes his presence could be a game-changer. “He’s proven to have a massive impact defensively — his mobility, physicality, and rim protection are elite. Offensively, he can stretch the floor, create in isolation, and he has the IQ to pick up our system quickly. He’s a terrific talent and a great kid — we expect big things from him.”
Quaintance participated in full practice on Monday for the first time this season, signaling that the Wildcats could finally get the boost they’ve been waiting for.
Kentucky vs. No. 22 St. John’s tips off Saturday at 12:30 p.m. ET on CBS, and fans will be watching closely to see if Quaintance’s return can immediately elevate the team.
