It looked shaky early — Duke couldn’t find their rhythm, and Texas smelled an upset. But then everything changed. Isaiah Evans caught fire, Cam Boozer went to work, and the Blue Devils reminded everyone why they’re built different. Here’s how Duke flipped the switch and took control late.
Isaiah Evans caught fire in the first half Tuesday night and led Duke in scoring as the Blue Devils pulled away late for a 75–60 win over Texas in the first annual Dick Vitale Invitational.
Evans hit four triples and finished with 23 points, giving Duke a much-needed jolt when their offense was sputtering early. Cam Boozer, despite a cold shooting night, battled through for a double-double — 15 points and 13 rebounds — showing exactly why he’s becoming the emotional engine of this team. Patrick Ngongba added 10 points before fouling out, giving Duke a solid interior presence throughout the night.
The first half wasn’t pretty. Duke looked sluggish at times, struggling to establish tempo or consistency. But just like in their exhibition games, something clicked after halftime. The Blue Devils tightened up defensively, moved the ball with more pace, and began to wear Texas down possession by possession.
By the final stretch, Duke had completely flipped the script — dominating on both ends and silencing any whispers of an upset. Even more impressive? The Blue Devils’ best player shot just 3-for-12 from the field, yet they still closed strong and looked in total control.
Anytime you beat an SEC opponent, it means something. But this one meant even more — a statement that even on an off night, Duke can still find ways to win convincingly.
Next up, the Blue Devils return home Saturday for their home opener against Western Carolina. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m., airing on the CW Network. Expect Cameron Indoor to be electric — because after this one, Duke fans know what this team is capable of when it locks in.
