The excitement surrounding Duke basketball transfer Cedric Coward is growing — but that might be a double-edged sword for the Blue Devils.
Coward, who recently committed to Duke, made it clear that he intends to stay in the NBA Draft process and evaluate his options before making a final decision about his future. While many expected the 6-foot-6 guard to return to college for his final year of eligibility, there’s increasing momentum behind his pro prospects.
NBA Draft analyst Jonathan Givony of ESPN recently attended one of Coward’s workouts in Los Angeles and came away impressed with what he saw.
“Hard not to be impressed by the tremendous physical profile (huge hands, 7’2 wingspan, terrific frame) and budding skill level,” Givony shared on social media. “Crazy trajectory from D3 to possible 1st round pick in a span of 3 years.”
Coward’s journey is a remarkable one. He began his college career at Division III Willamette, then transferred to Eastern Washington where he played two seasons. Most recently, he was limited to six games at Washington State due to injury. Despite the setbacks, his stock has continued to rise thanks to his unique blend of size, athleticism, and upside.
Following his commitment to Duke, Coward spoke highly of the program on The Field of 68 podcast, expressing enthusiasm about the team’s roster and the opportunity ahead. At the time, he appeared poised to take the next step in his college career by joining the Blue Devils. However, draft season is unpredictable, and rising evaluations like Givony’s could sway his plans.
While there’s currently no definitive indication that Coward will stay in the draft, Duke’s heavy recruitment effort signals their belief that he’ll ultimately play for them next season. He’s expected to fill the starting role vacated by the graduating Sion James.
The deadline for underclassmen to withdraw from the NBA Draft and retain college eligibility is May 28 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Until then, all eyes in Durham will be on Cedric Coward’s next move.
