Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James suffered a setback in the team’s playoff run against the Minnesota Timberwolves. James sustained a Grade 2 MCL sprain in his left knee after a collision with Donte DiVincenzo in Game 5.
The injury occurred midway through the fourth quarter when James collided with DiVincenzo, who was whistled for a foul on the play for a moving screen. James underwent an MRI on Thursday, which revealed the extent of the damage. According to a league source, the injury typically involves a recovery timeline of three to five weeks.
James’ absence would have significantly impacted the Lakers’ chances in the playoffs, but fortunately for the Timberwolves, the Lakers’ season had already ended with their elimination. The Lakers’ playoff exit was a surprise to many, given their collective playoff experience and ability to adapt to different schemes. However, the Timberwolves exposed the Lakers’ lack of athleticism, physicality, and endurance.
Despite the Lakers’ early playoff exit, James had a remarkable season, averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists in 70 games. He was on track to earn an All-NBA spot for a 21st consecutive season and holds a $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season.
