LeBron James is expected to return for his 23rd NBA season with the Los Angeles Lakers. Despite the team’s early playoff exit, James has hinted that he’s not ready to hang up his jersey just yet. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, James is expected to opt into his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season.
This decision comes as no surprise, given James’ previous comments about his future in the NBA. After last season’s playoff loss to the Denver Nuggets, James said, “The day I can’t give the game everything on the floor is the day I’ll be done. Lucky for you guys, that day is not today.” This suggests that James is committed to playing at a high level and won’t retire until he feels he can no longer contribute.
James’ potential return would be influenced by factors such as playing with his son, championship aspirations, and personal goals. He might want to play with his younger son, Bryce, who will be eligible for the 2026 NBA draft. With the addition of Luka Doncic, the Lakers might be in a better position to compete for a championship, which could motivate James to return. James has already broken numerous records, including becoming the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, but might still have personal goals to achieve in the league.
